Give me $20 on the Tecate-Corona Boxed Exacta

Brian Golden - Thursday, May 03, 2012

Expect to see a few sombreros adorning the distinguished ladies of Churchill Downs this Saturday, as Mexican pride meets Kentucky bluegrass, and Modelo meets mint julep. Two great annual drinking traditions on the same day should make for one heck of a party, as Cinco de Mayo shares the spotlight with the 138th running of The Kentucky Derby.

Shotgun beer with one hand and fill betting slips with the other. Sing songs with your friends and scream encouragement at your jockey. Trotters and tequila, margaritas and mares. What could be better?

Fiestas will be rolling all over the Boise area, especially at perennial favorites Parilla Grill, On The Border, Café Ole and many, many others. The Matador will be breaking out the tent party behind their downtown location, and Lakeview Park in Nampa is also in on the action.

So get out there and celebrate, but make sure your eyes and ears are tuned in at 4:24 PM (MST) for “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports.” 21 thoroughbreds pushing 40 mph with less distance between them than two awkward teenagers in the makeout room. Gotta love it.

Bet early and bet often I say, but don’t worry if the longshot trifecta you bet your rent check on doesn’t come through. You will still have seven more hours of Cinco de Mayo to wash away the pain.

As for my pick?

In the spirit of the day, my money is with “El Padrino”, though the handicapper in me fears he will be out front at the mile pole, only to fade off… like so many Cinco revelers. So maybe “I’ll Have Another” can carry the distance and bring home the roses. (Yes, that is an actual horse in the field)

PS, If that exacta comes in, I am quitting my day job.
